Welcome to the Angel Island Immigration Station Project

An Educational Experience by Dominican University

Come Learn About Angel Island's History

Engage with Public History:

Learn about the famous landmark's impact on the rich history of Western immigration through the lens of student public historians and Angel Island detainees. Lesser known than the East Coast immigration station at Ellis Island, which was a destination for mostly European immigrants, the Angel Island immigration station became a detention center for unwanted Asian immigrants, mostly coming from China and Japan.

History Revisited:

The immigrant stories of Angel Island have taken a long time to uncover, and historians are still investigating how the practices of the station affected South Asian, East Asian, Russian, European, and Latin American immigrants differently. Find out more through our Education Archives.

The Value Of Community:

The Value of Community: This project would not be possible without the involvement and collaboration between students, public historians, local community members, AIISF, and California State Park Staff at the Angel Island heritage site. We want to emphasize the value of community in helping us create a public history experience for all to engage with and portray an accurate, authentic view into the past.
